Mauro's Record Remains Intact
Zach Trembley's four-goal effort against rival Kennebunk got close to the YMS 8th Grade Boys record of 5 goals in a game.
YHS senior Nick Mauro holds the record for slicing through a defense five times in a game. The victim was Saco Middle School in October of 2018 when the diminutive 8th grader showed his skill in his last middle school game.
"I really wanted Nick to have a lot of freedom to strut his stuff in that game," said Coach Webster. "So I stuck him in a spot that their strongest players wouldn't notice."
Mauro was "hid" out on the left wing away from Saco's strength up the middle. There he found lots of open space and his superior skill rose to the occasion.
"He probably could have scored five more times if I didn't take him out," replied the long time YMS coach. "It was a great way to end his YMS career."
Zach's four goal effort was mostly scored by hard work up the middle. His blazing shots were too much for the keeper to handle. Most notably was the free kick from just outside the penalty area that rose up over the keeper's outstretched arms.
The victory over Kennebunk might have been the first win in about 10 years against the school to the north. Finishing out the game in the fine coastal mist made the ride home sweet.

Revived Wildcats Notch 5-1 over Rival Kennebunk
Kennebunk ME -- Zach Trembley blasted 4 goals yesterday as the 8th Grade Boys Soccer Team notched a 5-1 victory over Kennebunk. Zach also assisted on the 5th goal netted by Jasper Trafton. Grady Geller added an assist and played excellent midfield. Aiden Mello, Tyler Moores, and Max Hunter were stellar on defense.
The hosts took an early 1-0 lead with a big blast over goalkeeper Devin Conte's outstretched arms. The Wildcats fought right back and netted the equalizer off Zach's right foot blast. A handful of minutes later, York was awarded a free kick right outside the area and another Zach blast gave the Wildcats their first lead of the season at 2-1.
York looked to go up by a pair with a penalty kick late in the first frame. Jasper Trafton's upper corner shot was turned aside by the Rams keeper.
The second half proved to be more of the Zach Trembly story as two more goals poured in giving the visitors a comfortable margin. The final dagger was a nice partial breakaway
by Jasper. The speedy striker won the race and slid to the turf as the ball slid past the keeper for the final margin of victory.
It was a fantastic effort by all 13 players on the Wildcats team.
Devin Conte and Robert Dickson each played a half in goal and were superb in shutting down the Rams.
The Wildcats, who are now 1-1, are back in action on Thursday at the Village Field as they host Saco at 5:00 pm.

Opener Goes Awry for Wildcats
The Shapleigh Sharks provided too much of a task for the 8th Grade Boys Soccer Team as the visitors scored a 5-0 victory over York.
With high hopes for the new season, the Wildcats were somewhat surprised by the size, speed, and quickness of their neighbors to the south. With only one substitute, the York boys gave it their all for all 60 minutes.
With the game close at hand, Zach Trembly rose for a beautiful header off a corner kick by Aiden Mello. The header rang off the crossbar, keeping the 'Cats off the scoreboard. A goal there would have tied the game at 1-1. The Wildcats struck the woodwork again in the second half as all the good fortune was rolling the visitor's way.
Devon Conte had numerous excellent saves, keeping the game close most of the way. Heavy pressure by the Sharks late in the contest sealed the victory.

Welcome to the 2022 YMS 8th Grade Boys Soccer Team Website
Welcome to 8th Grade Boys Soccer. We are looking forward to another great season with the new squad. We have a 10 game season that runs for about 6-7 weeks through September and October. Practices and home games will be played at the Village Elementary School field. Practices will run from 2:30 - 4:00 pm. Game times vary depending on the opponent.
All players need to have the proper equipment that includes cleats, shin guards, socks, and mouth guards (these are required by our league and the Maine Principals Association). Uniforms will be handed out during a practice before the first game. Players need to purchase the socks from our athletic department ($5) and definitely will not be returned. Players can use socks from last year's middle school team.
On Thursday, September 1, a meeting for all middle school athletes will be held in the YMS gym. We will hear the words from our athletic director, Mrs. Mirick. We will then break into groups with your team and coach. Information will be given as to the protocols for playing middle school soccer.
I (Coach Webster) will see you all at school next week and we'll be ready to start the season with our first practice on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Enjoy the rest of the summer!
