York 1 @ Marshwood 4
Wednesday, Oct. 6
YORK, ME -- Under a crystal clear autumn sky, the York Boys 8th Grade soccer team traveled down the road to take on old rival Marshwood. The Wildcats were looking to turn around a 3-game losing skid and pick up their first win since the first game of the season.
After watching two jets seven miles overhead appear to be on a collision course, the Hawks and 'Cats collided themselves in a furious battle to get the upper hand in the first half. The hosts forced first half goalie Gabe to make numerous saves, a few right off the line. The Hawks did manage to get one over the line and take the early lead.
The 'Cats countered with a penalty kick goal, evening the game at 1-1. Riley blasted the free kick low to the right corner and the Wildcats were on the board.
However, Marshwood replied right at the end of the half with a straight one shot after a defensive miscue.
York regained its composure and forced more pressure in the Hawks end. They couldn't get the equalizer before the intermission.
In the second frame, the Hawks controlled more of the middle of the field which forced more action deep inside the Wildcat's half. Marshwood was awarded a penalty kick for a mysterious foul in the box. The player skied the freebie, but York entered the box too soon and Marshwood was awarded a second chance. Standing tall in the net, Cooper entice the kicker to splay the shot wide left and York breathed a sigh of relief.
The final tally of 4-1 came courtesy of two more scores by the host as time wound down.
A few final forays by York into the attacking zone sprung hope, but it wasn't meant to be on this day.
Playing well for York was Ben, Charlie, Riley, and Cooper. Danny D made a few nice plays on the right wing, setting up a goal scoring opportunity just before the final whistle marked the end of the game.
Next up for York is a rematch against Shapleigh next Wednesday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm with the YMS Girls Team playing after.
