YMS BOYS SOCCER TEAM EXPECTATIONS
Coach Peter Webster
York Middle School Boys Soccer is open to 7th and 8th grade boys. The team plays an 11 game interscholastic schedule against schools in the southern Maine area. Our season runs for seven weeks, from the beginning of September to the end of October. ANY PLAYER TRYING OUT MUST HAVE AN UPDATED (WITHIN THE LAST YEAR) PHYSICAL ON RECORD WITH THE SCHOOL NURSE! THIS MUST BE CHECKED BY THE PLAYER BEFORE TUESDAY, SEPT. 3RD. I WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING PHYSICALS ON THE DAY OF TRYOUTS!!!
General Team Expectations:
It is expected that every member of the team will make a full commitment to the team. By participating in Boys Soccer, this must be the student-athlete’s main commitment as an after school activity. The members of the team must be at every practice and every game. They must arrive at practice and games on time and be prepared to play. It is my intention to give every member of the team valuable and important playing time during the games. Absences from practices and games will result in a reduced amount of playing time.
It is also expected that each player will come to training sessions ready to listen and learn. This team is for the players, yet it needs guidance and leadership. It is expected that each member of the team gives me 100% of their undivided attention. It is critical that every player understands what I am teaching.
Another expectation is that each athlete will come to practices and games ready to give their best effort. Players will continually be evaluated throughout the season and therefore need to be showing at all times their best skills.
All team members are expected to abide by school and bus rules. As a representative of York Middle School, my expectations for proper behavior are higher than for the non-athlete. Misbehavior in school and especially on the bus to and from games will result in reduced playing time.
From these basic expectations, I will determine field positions and playing time.
Training Times and Location:
We will practice at the Village Elementary School field. We will train from 2:30 pm until 4:00 pm. All soccer players will walk together as one big group up to the VES field. The police officer at the corner of Organug and York Streets will stay until the teams have crossed the road.
Game Times and Locations:
Our home games will be held at VES. (Unless something unforeseen changes.) Game times vary due to the opponent's school schedule. Generally, when the 7th and 8th grade boys play together, the 7th grade game is first and the 8th grade game second. When the 8th grade boys play with the 8th grade girls, the boys game will be first and the girls will be second. However, keep a close check on the team website or the school website for game times.
Equipment Requirements:
All players are expected to supply their own soccer shoes, socks and shin pads. Mouth guards are mandatory! Players with eye glasses are encouraged to get prescription athletic glasses (consult your eye doctor). They at least must have a strap to keep the glasses from falling off. The players will get a uniform jersey and shorts. Players do not need to bring a soccer ball, they will be supplied. Players are expected to bring their own water. There will not be any common source water supplied. I suggest that each player keep a water bottle in their locker and fill it up when they come to the field.
Cancellation of Practice or Games:
If a practice or game is cancelled, an announcement will be made by 12:00 noon and students are encouraged to call parents. Parents, please do not call the school before 12:00 noon regarding cancellation of practice or games.
