York 1 Dover 6
Plays Dover Tough in the First Half
The YMS boys soccer team played a very solid first half against the much bigger Dover Middle School soccer squad on Thursday. The Green Wave certainly had the size and speed advantage over the Wildcats, but the hearty dose of superior effort kept the game within reach in the first 30 minutes of action. The game was much closer than the 6-1 final on the afternoon.
A miscue right off the kickoff set the 'Cats back on their heals as the hosts notched the first score on their first touch of the game. The Wildcats fought back to make a much more balanced game. Even though the hosts had more chances on goal, the visitors did control the flow of the game in the midfield area. Dover's stout back line was able to thwart many of York's attacks. At the other end, Quinten Ayer made numerous solid saves to keep Dover with only one click on the scoreboard.
However, about midway through the first frame, Noah Gennaro lofted a perfect aerial over the defense's head. Nick Mauro gathered in the pass and squirmed around the keeper to slot the equilizer off the far post. (Twas quit the celebration between Mauro and Gennaro). The two teams headed to their respective benches for the intermission with the match knotted at 1-1.
The second half was a much different story as Dover came in waves against the undermanned Wildcats. Tiring legs led to a handful of mistakes by York and the home team capitalized, potting five tallies for the comfortable victory.
York now has some time off with their next game not until Friday, October 12. The 'Cats will host Wells for an early 3:30 kickoff at the York Village Elementary School field.
