Wildcats 1 Sanford 8
Tues. Sept. 22, 2021
York, ME -- The second home match of the season provided the YMS Boys 8th Grade Soccer Team with a steep challenge as they took on the Spartans of Sanford Junior High. A much bigger, faster, and stronger side from inland was too much for the Wildcats as the host's fell 8-1.
The match started with the visitors using their strength and speed to press forward deep into the York defensive zone. Goalkeeper Cooper D. held Sanford at bay as long as he could before the opponents peppered the goal from near and far. The ball started finding its way to the back of the net. Sanford did a great job keeping York pinned in their own end as the hosts struggled to advance the play upfield.
The Wildcats finally got their feet about themselves and started attacking the Sanford end. The final 10 minutes of the half were more evenly played, yet at the intermission whistle the scoreboard read 6-0.
The famous motto, Citius, Altius, Fortius seemed to apply to the Spartans. They were faster, taller, and stronger. The second half saw the Wildcats up their own intensity with speed and grit. The flow of play was much more even after the break. Midway through the half, Riley B. made a mad 3/4 field dash and finished off the run with a low shot inside the right post and York was on the board.
Gaining confidence from that run, York continued to harass the Sanford ball carriers. They created many solid chances in the late cloudy afternoon. In the net for the 'Cats in the second half was Gabe C and his stellar play from the first game continued. York only yielded 2 goals in the have and when the final whistle blew, the score was 8-1.
York could be proud of the way they upped their intensity and play as the second half wore on. With that kind of effort, the team will be ready for Wells on Friday (away at 3:30).
